Overview
China’s air traffic market is among the fastest growing in the world.
Average annual growth rate of air travelers in China has been more than 15%
over the last several years and high growth rates are expected to prevail
until 2020. Annual cargo volume is also increasing by double digits.
CAAC is projecting that total air traffic volume will double between 2005
and 2010. In passenger traffic, this means an increase from 138 million passengers
in 2005 to 270 million by 2010 and an increase in air cargo to 5.7 million
tonnes. Industry forecasts predict that China will become the second largest
aviation market in the world, after the United States, in three to five years.
With growth of this magnitude, China will need approximately 2,800
civilian aircraft, 220 airports and 40,000 trained pilots by 2020.
This creates great infrastructure challenges as China strives to balance
service quality, airport efficiency, flight security and airspace management.
CAAC has stated that, in accordance with China’s 11th five year plan
(2006-2010), it will establish, as a priority, technologically advanced
and systematically reliable air traffic control and management systems,
with a focus on safety, capacity, efficiency and security management, for
a future new generation air transport systems. As well, it will expand
airport facilities, install and upgrade airport security systems and establish
an IT network to synchronize airport operations.
All this activity means unparalled opportunities for major, low
cost and regional airlines, air cargo carriers, airport operators and developers,
aircraft manufacturers and suppliers, maintenance companies, the institutions
that finance them and the legal and other consultants that advise them.
